Doubling our money for land protection!

Twenty-three million dollars have now been made available by the Province to conservation groups such as the KCC. These funds, acquired through a crown share agreement with the federal government, are to be used to meet the Province's goal of protecting 12% of Nova Scotia land by the year 2015. The funds, to be used for the purchase and protection of some of the province's "most ecologically significant, threatened, and irreplaceable areas of private land," will be administered by Trustees and a science advisory committee and will be available to fund from 50 to 70% of the cost of land purchases.

Some of the criteria used to evaluate applications for these funds are: the biodiversity of the land, the presence of endangered or threatened plants, birds or animals, and the size of the parcel, either alone or with adjoining protected land.

The KCC has been working to understand the criteria and to assess the eligibility of available land in our area. Check back for updates on our efforts to take advantage of this rare opportunity.
